skipping stones and building sand castles

When I think back on my childhood, I think of the summers spent with my family at our tiny log cabin on the lake and with my best friend Mary at her family lake house in New York. We would sleep in our bathing suits so when morning came, there was no time wasted. The quality of summer was judged by the calluses on our feet. Our tan lines were not purposeful, but were swirled in disarray over our backs. Our hair  was bleached and curled by the sun and sand found its way into every possible crevice.  Now that I’m a grown up, I find myself longing for those summers. Sometimes, I even convince my husband to go on a day trip to Lake Michigan just cause I crave the sound of the waves and the heat of the sand under my feet.

So when Terese invited me up to photograph her family on Lake Huron, I found myself excited to work on a Sunday! She and her family were spending the holiday weekend together at a gorgeous turn of the century beach house on a private bay. The family had been coming up to Port Austin for years and it acted as a great meeting place for everyone coming in from out of state. I had so much fun photographing everyone and I am feeling very blessed to be able to capture some of their family memories on film.

As life goes by at warped speed, it was nice to be reminded of the important things…and how a day can be well spent just skipping stones and building sand castles.
